Hey Parents,
I hope you all had a fantastic weekend.  Lisa and I enjoyed watching our Eagles win the championship in such a resounding fashion!

This week and next week I will be focusing on ensuring our class has completed certain midyear benchmarks.  Though the Christmas break is right around the corner, it is important that the students stay committed to finishing out the year with a strong work ethic.  For the next two weeks we will focus more on reading projects and activities during our language arts period.  On Friday the students will take their comprehension test on The Shakespeare Stealer.   For one of our center activities on Wednesday your child will need a mirror.  Like the actors in our novel your child will get to try their hand at using stage makeup to create visual effects.

I will be sending the topic eight test home for you to review on either Monday or Tuesday so look for that in your child’s folder.  Tuesday we will begin topic 9.  Personally this is one of my favorite topics.  It is about lines, angles, and shapes.  If your child is a visual or tactile learner they will most likely enjoy this topic as well.  Because I am not sure if we will test on this topic before the Christmas break, I will quiz the students on the material we cover this week on Friday.

I just have a few reminders about the folders.  Please sign any graded work in your child’s folder.  You have probably noticed that I do not take out homework material.  This is for two reasons: one I want to give you ample time to use the homework as a resource to review with your child, and two I want to make sure that you are aware of the material we are covering during each topic.  The lessons build from day to today.

*I am planning on teaching the students a new game at recess this week.  If you have a kickball or something like that could you please send it?  Write your name on it so it won’t be confused with the other balls that are brought in.  I don’t need them on a certain day but I would like to teach them Tuesday or Wednesday.

Tomorrow

Hey parents,
Tomorrow is our tea party day for conceptual.   I mentioned in the previous blog that our class is responsible  for the sandwiches.  Please send 12 (each student needs 12 so 144 for the class) of the small sandwiches to school tomorrow.

We have our math topic 8, spelling, vocabulary and grammar test tomorrow.  Any information they need to study can be found in their journals which they are bringing home.  We will not have our science quiz tomorrow.
Thanks,
TRENT

Sunday, November 27, 2011

I hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving.  Lisa and I enjoyed seeing our families and decorating our home for the holidays.  I hope all of the students are well rested and eager to return to school.  This week we are diving right back into our studies.

The students are enjoying The Shakespeare Stealer.  Remember every Tuesday night the students are assigned a small amount of reading to complete at home.   It is very important they do this because they are quizzed on their reading on Wednesday.  Those scores have a big impact on their overall reading score.

For grammar this week we will talk about irregular verbs and contractions using not.  On Friday the students will complete a quiz on linking verbs, helping verbs, irregular verbs and contractions using not.

On Monday I will spend a good portion of our math period reviewing information in topic 8.  My goal is to complete the topic and test on Friday.  Please look over the practice and re-teaching sheets I am sending home so that we can identify any areas of concern before the test.

We will continue to discuss Earth’s features this week.  I will most likely test on this topic Wednesday or Thursday.  The students will have a study guide in their folders on Tuesday.

For conceptual on Friday Mrs. Lisa needs the following materials:
*ALL students need to bring a mug / teacup with their name on it for Friday.
4th grade: finger sandwiches - ham, cheese, turkey, cucumber (recipe for cucumber sandwiches: http://teapartygirl.com/2011/04/cucumber-tea-sandwiches-101/ but they do not have to be this fancy)
Thanks,
TRENT

I had such a fantastic experience teaching the students about the Medieval period.  I was especially proud of our fourth graders during our many projects and activities.  They worked so hard and set great examples for the younger children during conceptual projects.  I am so thankful that I am the fourth grade teacher.  Each of them has a unique characteristic that enriches our classroom.

Last week we started on topic 8, which focuses on two-digit multiplication.  We started the test on Friday and will finish it on Monday.  This is not going to be counted as a test grade, rather I am viewing it more as a classroom assignment.  Because multiplication is the basis of so many other skills they will need, I am using this test as an opportunity to work one-on-one with the students on aspects of multiplication with which they are struggling.  Please practice basic multiplication facts with your child at home.

I hope you were all able to review the grammar test I sent home with your child.  This week’s topics will include: linking verbs, helping verbs, and irregular verbs.

The students are currently working on a Mississippi studies project.  I have given each child a rubric that shows what I am expecting from each project and presentation.  The students are working very hard and the PowerPoints they are working on look fantastic.  If your family has any interesting historical Mississippi stories or artifacts, encourage your child to include those things in their presentation.

In science this week we are going to focus on Earth’s features such as mountains, oceans, rivers, valleys, etc.    We will also discuss Earth’s changes and the forces that drive those changes.
Parents, please take a look at our snack rotation.  We have completed the cycle so it will reset.

Math Test Update

The math test will be on Wednesday.  Many of you probably have Monday night plans.

Week 11

Hey Parents,
Thanks for all of the help at the Medieval Festival.  I feel it was a great success.  The students had a great time and learned about the Medieval period in the process.  I just have a few announcements for you for the upcoming week.  On Tuesday we will have the topic 6 math test.  I will send a study guide home on Monday.  This is perhaps the most difficult topic we have had yet, so please look over that information with your child.   Also, use the Envision website I posted previously to review as well.  In language arts we started discussing compound words, action verbs, and verb tenses last week.  This week we are going to talk about subject verb agreement, linking verbs, and helping verbs.  I will test on last week’s and this week’s information on Friday.  Last week we also began to talk about the difference between chemical and physical changes.  We will further that discuss by talking about how to identify objects composed of more than one substance.  I am planning on giving a science test on Wednesday.     For conceptual this week we are learning about the plague, castles, medieval roles, and famous medieval figures.
*On Monday your child can wear their Halloween costume.

Eat Like a King

Hey parents!  I hope you had a great fall break.  This is going to be a fun week at BDS.   On Friday we will have our Fall Festival.  As I posted earlier, our class is responsible for the food.   Two parents will bring one of the following.  Please let me know soon which food you want to bring.   Remember, two people are bringing each item below.   Each parent should plan on preparing enough for about forty people.
Foods:
Bread
Turkey Legs

Fall Festival

I am very excited about the Medieval Fall Festival on October 28.  There are several activities planned that I feel will be enjoyed by the adults and the children.  The parents of each class will run booths during the Fall Festival.  We have been selected to station the food booth.  This week I am going to compile a list of possible foods for us to prepare.  I will post the list and from there we can decide who will make what.

Monday

Hey Parents,
It was a great start to the Medieval Unit.  This past week we discussed the contributing factors that lead to the fall of Rome and feudalism; the structural governing system of most medieval societies.   I especially enjoyed the feudalism game we played on Friday.  The students took on the role of Kings, nobles, knights, peasants, and serfs.  They completed tasks by using the feudalist system to delegate jobs.  They had a blast playing the game, and in the process gained a basic understanding of how the system worked and those that worked within it.
This week is Fall Break.  Monday is a scheduled school day, but I understand that many of the students will be absent.  If you know you will not be attending please let me know.  On Monday I will be in meetings from 9:00-11:00.  Tara McMahon will be in the classroom at that time.  I have some activities planned for that day, but nothing will be completed that your child, if absent, will have to makeup.  I am sending report cards home on Monday.  The grades are an average of grades taken during the first nine weeks.  Please let me know if you have any questions.
I did hear back from Ellen Ruffin, who is the librarian/curator over the DeGrommond.  They would love to have us visit.  I really wanted to go last week, but a few students were absent, and I want it to be something we experience as a whole class.   I will keep you posted on this.
Thanks,
TRENT

Wow, what a performance!  I am always amazed at our fourth grade class and all of the students at BDS.  They did such a great job.  They have been so excited about sharing their performance with you all. I hate that the Roman unit is already over, but I am extremely excited about the Medieval unit.  I have planned some engaging, creative, hands on activities for the students.  Though many know it as the Dark Ages, I hope it is full of enlightenment.
This Friday was busy!  I had a few test scheduled for yesterday, but we were only able to take two of them.  We took the conceptual post test and the Bronze Bow reading quiz.  We were not able to take the vocabulary or the spelling test.  I sent the vocabulary test home.  Please send that back completed by Tuesday.  I will not count spelling-pretest scores against the students.  We are still working on our writing project.  I hope you have had the chance to read your child’s story.  They are really working hard and developing traits of good writers.  I am checking into the possibility of arranging a visit to the de Grummond museum at USM.  This is a wonderful place to see primary sources that display the evolution of a story, from the pre-writing stage all the way to publishing.  I will keep you updated on this and will post on this blog Monday to tell you when we will go. Click here to visit their website.
I am sure that many of you have noticed that the complexity of topic 5 is greater than that of the previous math topics.  The students are doing well in the classroom, but they need to practice at home.  Please be sure to check over any assigned HW with your child.  The whole class performed phenomenally on the past two test.  They really want to make it three test in a row with everyone scoring well, so please let me know if you notice a particular issue your child is struggling with.
*All students need to have Crispin by Tuesday.
Thanks,
TRENT

The Fall of the Roman Empire

Our Roman Feast was a blast. The students did a great job making the bread.  I was impressed that many of the students tried all of the interesting foods made by the other grades.  They even convinced me to try artichokes.   Next week we will wrap up the Roman Unit.  We are looking forward to the culmination performance next Friday.  Our class is working hard on our project for the performance.  Please send a flashlight next week before the show.  We will need them to practice for culmination.
Some of the students did not finish the topic 4 quiz today so we will finish those on Monday.  We will then move on to topic 5.  This topic deals with multiplying.  There will not be a test on this topic until the week of Oct. 10.
Mrs. Jennifer and I are both reading Crispin by Avi for the next unit.  Jennifer will be ordering the books on Monday.  Let me know if you would like her to order yours as well.  Just send eight dollars for the book to school and I will give it to Jennifer.  Here is the link on Amazon with a summary of the text.
Next week we continue with our writing lessons.  We will begin to focus on each stage of the writing process (pre-write, write, revise, edit, and publish).  It is my goal to complete these mini-lessons before the Medieval unit in preparation for a writing project I have in mind for the unit.
As always let me know if you need anything,
TRENT

cooking time

Our cooking time is 9:45.  We plan on eating the Roman meal at 2:00.  I hope to see you there.

Tomorrow

Hey Parents,
Don’t forget that tomorrow is our Roman Feast Day.  Your children are welcome to dress in Roman garb tomorrow.  Here is a link to a site that shows how to make togas.  http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Toga-out-of-a-Bedsheet .  If they would like to dress as a Roman soldier that would be fine too.  I have talked to some of you about bringing supplies.  Please drop off the material in the morning.  I will be posting on this blog again a little later today to let you all know what time we will be in the kitchen.  Several of the grades have cooking projects.  The teachers will discuss who gets the kitchen and when.   I know several of you have asked to join in, so be sure to check the blog night for our cooking time.

You probably noticed that your child has “study for math test” written in their planner.  We are going to be taking the topic four  test tomorrow, but I am considering it a quiz/homework grade.  Many of the questions we will work as a class.  They are bringing home their journals to study.  If you have any questions just give me a call.  Visit this site with your child and review topic 4.    http://www.pblunit10.com/envis4math/envisionmath.html
Thanks,

supplies for Friday

Hey parents, I do not need those supplies until Friday not today. Thanks!

Saturday, September 24, 2011

Hey Parents,
It was another great week at BDS!  It is hard to believe how much we have already accomplished this year.  Every week offers something new and exciting.  This past week we played Roman games, talked about Roman government, and held a mock trial.  This upcoming week we will continue the learning with more great lessons.  This week we will learn about the Punic Wars, Cleopatra, and Julius Caesar.
I was very pleased with the performance of the class on this week’s math test.  I hope you all have seen their test.  It is clear they all worked very hard during this math topic.  I know they will continue to perform well throughout the year.  On Monday we will start topic 4 which deals with division.
I will be sending the grammar test home Monday night for you and your child to review.  This week we will finish up our lessons on nouns and start learning about abbreviations.  We will take a closer look at the parts of a book and end the week with learning about compound words.
Please remember to sign their planners, test, and work that is sent home.
*For an activity that we are completing on Friday, could you please let me know which material you can bring from the following list.  Our class is contributing bread to the Roman feast.
Flour (6 cups), 3 packages of fast-rising yeast, sugar, salt, vegetable oil, large plastic bags, rolling pin, 6 loaf pans, grease spray
Thanks,
TRENT

Hey parents,
I hope everyone had a great weekend.  My weekend was very busy to say the least. Lisa and I are in the process of moving into our new home so please forgive me for this newsletter being a little later and a touch briefer than usual.

On Friday we will have a grammar quiz on nouns (singular, plural, common, proper, and possessive).  Please remind your child to bring their journals home, so you can look over their notes with them.  We are also going to have our math test for topic 3 on Friday.

I hope you have noticed the new homework planners the students brought home with them today.  Cindy Thames purchased these for our class, and I think they are going to be immensely helpful.  Please be sure to sign off on all of the days.

Thanks,
Trent

When in Rome......

The boundaries of the Roman Empire have reached the grounds of BDS!  This unit promises to be packed with fun activities and engaging lessons.  I enjoyed the Greek unit so much and am looking forward to transitioning to a new topic.
Math: We have begun topic three which deals with understanding multiplication.  Today we talked about multiplication as repeated addition.  We used Lego blocks as manipulatives and designed our own arrays.  I feel confident that the students will do very well with this topic.  We will not test on this subject until next week.
Language Arts:  “Far down the mountain, on the narrow ribbon of road, he spotted a moving line that threw off reddish flashes of metal in the sunlight.  Legionaries.  At the sight, black hatred churned up in him.  Out of habit he spat violently.” – Elizabeth George Speare The Bronze Bow.  Today we started reading our book for the unit.  Every Tuesday the students will have reading homework.  This would be a great night for you to discuss the text with them.  For our grammar study session, we will learn about time order words and different types of nouns.  There will not be a test on this until next week.  Wednesday is “bring your favorite noun to school day”.  The student can bring three of their favorite things to school.  For spelling, please note that “Legionaries” has only one n.  It is correct on the spelling list but incorrectly spelled on the vocabulary list (whoops).
Conceptual- This week in conceptual we will learn about the topography of Rome by studying key features of maps.  We will learn about the creation of Roman: both myths and facts.  The children will even create their own versions of how BDS began.  On Thursday we will start our Fourth grade classroom project from this unit.  We are going to design and create a three dimensional map of Rome.   Supplies will be needed for this, so I will get you information on this project very soon.  On Friday we will learn about the religion of ancient Rome.

Test tomorrow

Parents, tomorrow’s grammar test will cover: compound subjects, compound predicates, complete subjects, simple subjects, complete predicates, simple predicates, and correcting run-on sentences.  The students should have their journals with them today to study.  They can use these journals during the test, so they might want to add additional notes and examples tonight.  The math sheets in their folders are just additional practice to get them ready for the test.  They do not have to complete all of the problems on those sheets.

This week at BDS

Even though this is a short week we have a lot happening in the next three days.  The students have learned so much during the Greek unit.  This week in conceptual we are going to learn about the Persian War and the Peloponnesian war.   We will also discuss Greek art and the students will get to design their own mosaic.
In language arts we are going to finish reading The Lightning Thief.  The students will take a comprehension quiz for this book on Friday.  In grammar we will talk about run-on sentences as well as review some of last week’s lessons.  The students will take grammar test #2 on Thursday.  The students should have their journals at home on Wednesday to help them study.    On Friday we will begin to talk about time order words.  This week we will analyze the writing process and examine traits of authors and good readers.  I would like the students to bring in their favorite book.  We are going to research authors and find commonalities between them.
Our science lesson this week will focus on the importance of using scientifically descriptive words to explain materials.  In the previous weeks we have tried to start thinking like scientist, now I would like to start seeing the students incorporate scientific terminology into their lexicon during our science times.
This week for math we will be finishing topic two.  The test will be on Thursday.  I will send home a study packet on Wednesday.  On Friday we will start topic three on multiplication.  Please stress to your child the importance of checking over their work.  Many missed problems on the last test were caused by inattentiveness.  Also, let them know that I never mind if they need help understanding the wording or directions of a word problem.  It is much better to get something clarified, than to miss a question.
Friday at 1:30 you are invited to our culmination performance.  The kids are looking forward to expressing some of what they have learned in the first four weeks.  Our class will be sharing a little about the paper making activity and how history has been recorded.
*If you have not already ordered the book for the next unit, please do so soon.  Thanks

Book for next unit

Hey parents,
I have picked the next book for the Roman Empire unit.  It is The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare.  Here is a link to purchase the book on Amazon.  http://www.amazon.com/Bronze-Bow-Elizabeth-George-Speare/dp/0395137195/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1315072717&sr=8-1
Please order this as soon as you can so that it will be in for the next unit.  Thanks, and be safe out in this crazy weather!

No tests tomorrow

Hey parents, I just wanted to let you know that we will not have a grammar or math test tomorrow, but we will have our spelling test.
We are having our BDS Olympic Games, so the students should dress accordingly.  This should be something light they will be comfortable running around in.   Make sure to send a bottle of water or Gatorade with your child.  Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Trent

Week 3

Can you believe we are already half-way through our first unit?  This week we will have more exciting, fun, and engaging activities for the students.
This past Friday the students completed spelling, grammar, and math tests.  You should see those in their folders this Monday.  Please send those back signed.  This week we have new topics to discuss.  Our reading time has been going very well.  The students really enjoy the book.  Remember, Tuesday nights the students have a chapter they must read at home.  In our grammar study session time we will talk about complete subjects and predicates, simple subjects and predicates, combining sentences: compound subjects and predicates, and correcting run-on sentences.  On Friday they will have a test on this information.  This week will be our first week to kick-off our writing lessons.  We are going to start them off with a paper making activity and discuss the history of writing and the tools which have made writing possible.  For math this week we will work our way through activities and problems that will improve the student’s ability to add and subtract whole numbers.  We will look at different strategies and methods.    We will not have a math test on Friday but I will most likely give them a small quiz.  In our conceptual time this week we will take a closer look at Athens and Sparta, Greek schools, architecture, and theatre, and on Friday we will have our own Olympic games.
I am looking forward to the coming week.  Please check this site often for updates.
Thanks,
TRENT

Thursday, August 25, 2011

Parents,
Tomorrow we have three tests.  I have included a topic one math study packet in the folder.  Your child does not have to complete this packet.  This is just for you and your child to review what we have been discussing in class.  They should also have their math journals in their book bags.  The journals have notes and examples.
Their language arts exam covers sentences and fragments, types of sentences (interrogative, imperative, declarative, and exclamatory), conjunctions and compound sentences, and punctuation.  They should have their journals.  These journals have been used by the students for notes and recording examples.  They should review their journals tonight and make sure that they can readily find information in them for the quiz tomorrow.
I usually allow the students to use their journals during my exams.  I feel this is a way to encourage students to be more attentive to details covered in class.  I believe cultivating the skill of one’s ability to record, access, interpret, and use information is vital for success in any educational setting.  Please request that your child bring home their subject journals from time to time so that you may monitor their work.
Thanks,
TRENT

Parents, tomorrow is the spelling pretest.  Look over the sentences with your students.  I will pick three sentences for the pretest from the ten they wrote on Monday.  While your child is practicing check to make sure they are capitalizing sentences and using correct ending punctuation.

Spelling

Hey parents,
One of the components of our language arts period is spelling.  This year, rather than give them a random list of words to spell, I will be making their spelling test based on misspelled words from sentence dictation.  It is important that our fourth graders correctly spell common usage words as well as grade level words.  I feel this system will allow me to identify problem areas and correct bad spelling tendencies.  Each week I will pick ten of the words that were misspelled by your child to test them on at the end of the week.  You will find the list of misspelled words in your child's folder today.  I will send home their list of ten words tomorrow.

Also please remember to send a shoe box with your child to school tomorrow.
Thanks,
TRENT

Great Start

We've had a fantastic start this year at BDS.  I hope that your child has been telling you all about the fun learning taking place.  I am excited about the development of our classroom community  We are forming a classroom identity around the varied strengths of the classroom members.  I have started sending folders home, so you should see those in their book bags.  In the folder there will be work samples, notes, test, and other information.  One side of the folder is labeled "keep at home" and the other side is labeled "send back".  Look through the folders and feel free to ask any questions about its contents.  Being that it is the first week of school I have not assigned any homework yet but look for homework to be in the folders next week.  I would like you to look over assignments with your child and sign-off on completed work.
I would love for parents to stop by and take part in our classroom activities.  Just send me an email and we will schedule a time.

*For an activity this Friday your child needs to bring the cardboard tube from a toilet paper roll.

Lunch Menus

Hey parents,
I have added a new page to the blog.  This page will have the lunch calenders posted.  Currently you will find the August and September calender.  At the end of each month you will turn in the next months calender with the days that your child will be eating checked off.  Please bring in the calender for August on the 15th.

A Whole New Year of Learning

It is hard to believe that it is almost time for the new school year to begin.  I hope all of you have had an excellent summer.  This upcoming year is going to be absolutely amazing.  The teachers have been planning and preparing activities that are designed to be fun, engaging, and informative.  I will be contacting each of you very soon.  I know that through our collaboration we can create an environmental that is conducive to learning.

This year we will use these blogs as a way for the teachers and parents to interact.  This will be a great way for parents to stay informed and involved.  On the blogs you will find newsletters, contact information, and supply list.  The blog will constantly change as the year goes on.  Use this resource as a way for you to be an involved member of our classroom community.

The first day of school is on August 15th.  This will be a day for you to meet with the teachers and drop off supplies.  The students can visit with their new and old friends and also explore their new classroom.  You can come anytime from 9:00 till 12:00.  August the 16th is our first full day of school.  School will begin at 8:15.  Please be sure to have your child here on time every morning.  It is important that we establish a routine early on so all of the many activities we have planned can be completed.
